Please answer two of the following four reading explorations (12-point type, double-spaced). Be sure to support your answers from the readings. Your answers are due via Blackboard by Monday, September 12: 1. Read the excerpt from Luther’s Address to the German Nobility (please see the attached copy). Answer the following questions: Which of Luther’s assertions would the Church of Rome have found heretical? Why? Which aspects of this selection might be called anti-authoritarian? Which might be called democratic? 2. Read the excerpt from Montaigne’s On Cannibals (please see the attached copy). Answer the following questions: “Every one gives the title of barbarism to everything that is not in use in his own country,” writes Montaigne. Why does he write this? Does this claim hold true in our own day and age? 3. Read the excerpt from Shakespeare’s Sonnets (please see the attached copy). Answer the following question: What does each of these sonnets convey about the nature of love? 4. Read the excerpt from Shakespeare’s Hamlet (please see the attached copy). Answer the following questions: What profound question does Hamlet address in his soliloquy? What conclusion does Ophelia reach at the end of her conversation with Hamlet? The following grading scale applies: Assignment purpose: This assignment will introduce you to important primary written sources in history, and in the process you will attain a more in-depth understanding of the cultures and historical periods under consideration for the week. You will also demonstrate your own comprehension of the readings by answering select questions given in the assignment instructions. This assignment will be accomplished by reading the assigned readings in the course textbook. (course objectives 2.1, 2.4, 2.5, 2.8, 4.1, 4.4) Grading: Two reading explorations and their questions must be addressed according to the instructions. Addressing only one reading reflection will result in an automatic 20-point deduction. All the questions in the chosen reading explorations must be answered. An automatic 15-point deduction per skipped question applies. The answers must meet the requirement of one full paragraph per reading exploration. A full paragraph consists of a minimum of five sentences. The answers are to be written in complete sentences, including proper grammar and spelling. Excessive writing errors will result in a deduction. In-text citations giving line references to the textbook readings must be included. Failing to give references will result in a deduction.
