Purpose: The project will give the graduate student the opportunity to explore the role development of a selected role for a nurse with advanced nursing education. The student will:
1. Review the literature related to the historical, educational, and professional development of the selected role.
Explore the current practice environment and related legal and professional considerations.
Identify and interview a current practitioner employed in the selected role.
Critique personal skills/characteristics within the context of the desired role.
Develop an educational/practice plan.
Components of the project and grading criteria:
General role information (literature review) 45 points
Description of the distinguishing or defining characteristics of the selected role.
Description of the historical development of the role.
Current regulations for education, certification, credentialing, and competencies.
Description of professional organizations that support the role.
Current practice settings where the role is implemented.
Relationship to other health care team members, nursing, and non-nursing.
Interview 25 points
Where does the nurse practice?
Which role(s) does the nurse assume?
What are the nurse’s responsibilities?
What barriers exist if any, making it difficult for the nurse to implement the role?
What resources are available assisting the nurse to implement the role?
Personal development 20 points
Identify a guiding theoretical model (cite literature source) that may guide role development.
Describe the personal characteristics /traits that you believe you have that make you an appropriate candidate for the selected role.
Explore some of the learning needs you perceive yourself to have as you prepare for the role.
List four development goals that will facilitate your progress toward assuming the role
Format: 10 points
The paper should be between 3-4 double spaced pages in length excluding title page and references. Grammar, APA format, and appropriate citations and referencing are required. A short abstract is required. The interview and personal development section of the paper can be written in the first person but must be in APA paragraph style, not question and answer format. The student is expected to use at least three recent journal articles in addition to their assigned textbook for this section.
