POL 202: International Relations Fall 2022 Online Op-ed Essay Assignment Prompt and Rubrics (same for both assignments) Description: An op-ed (literally, published opposite the editorials) is an opinion essay published in a newspaper that identifies a policy problem and communicates an argument or position on that problem. Each of your opinion essays should focus upon a substantive topic detailed in the 7 substantive units of this class (see syllabus and D2L page for details of the topics of the class). You must write about two separate topics for your two op-ed assignments. Details: Your essays should each: • Identify a policy problem. This should clearly relate to international relations, which means that at least two countries are involved and affected by the problem. • Discuss some of the root causes of the identified problem. • Propose at least one potential solution to the problem, discussing how this solution addresses the problem and its root causes. • Draw upon some external references to offer evidence in support of the problem identification and potential solution. • Be between 800 and 1000 words in length. Op-ed essays are clear and concise. So, you should edit the essay multiple times before submitting it to make sure that you are not waffling or straying from the main argument
