The purpose of this assignment is to write a “contextual analysis.” This is an analysis of an example of Chinese Opera or style of Indian theatre. You will choose one example of a form of Chinese Opera (Peking, Cantonese, Revolutionary, or other form), or one style of Indian theatre (Kuttiyattam, Folk Theatre, etc) to focus on. These do NOT have to be styles we have already studied. Use other texts/sources to illuminate and offer context related to this form of theatre. In this particular assignment you are required to bring at least three other sources into this analysis in addition to your text book. They may include:
Print: book, magazines, periodicals, peer reviewed journals, etc
Online Sources: websites, blogs, podcasts, archived material, etc.
Encyclopedic Sources: Encyclopedia Brittanica, Dictionary. com, these sources may only comprise ONE of your three sources.
Wikipedia is not an appropriate source for an academic paper. It’s a starting point. You can use the bibliography listed in the articles as a good source for legitimate, peer reviewed, research.
The primary context of these theatrical styles are the socio-political circumstances at the time of the this form of theatre’s inception. As the style you have chosen rose in popularity, what aspects of this society was most reflected in the work? Sources which will provide cultural and historic context for this analysis may include pieces focusing on:
the history of India/China
examples of similar forms of Indian/Chinese culture (dance and drama)
the history of the origin of the form
key developmental changes in the form
the current state (or place) this form has in popular Indian/Chinese culture
This topic is broad enough that you could easily write a series of articles on the subject. You must develop your thesis and in doing so narrow your field of inquiry.
Clearly state your thesis in terms that can be easily defined and supported by example and research
Offer historical context directly linked to the development of this form of theatre
Cite your sources in the body of your paper or footnote it
Summarize your points and offer concrete conclusions
Style: the paper will include varied and forceful sentences, purposeful and apt diction, and a tone that expresses the writer’s engagement with the subject and the value of analysis.
Form: the paper will be formatted according the MLA manuscript guidelines, demonstrating strong control of the conventions of academic discourse in the areas of paragraph structure, punctuation, mechanics, and documentation; the control should be strong enough to allow the writer to push the boundaries of contextual analysis in imaginative and effective ways.
