Explanation of how you believe recreation and leisure may be used to promote equity, access, and just communities (10)____ formatting & references (10 points) • writing style/organization, grammar, spelling (5) ___ • correct apa format in text & in references (5) ___ total score ______ /75

Instructions The “This I Believe” paper, a concept adapted from the popular radio series of Edward Murrow, is a summary of what the student believes about recreation and leisure and its place in contemporary society. Throughout the course, we have spoken about various definitions of leisure, leisure’s evolution over the course of time, and how like all social systems, leisure and recreation is influenced by systemic, structural, and inter- and intrapersonal barriers for different populations and communities. In the final paper, you should reflect on the topics discussed in class, carefully cross-examining and critically assessing the social and environmental inequities that currently exist in parks, recreation, and leisure, and how the next evolution can be more just (i.e, equitable and inclusive). The paper should conclude with the student’s personal definition of recreation and leisure and what the form they “believe” it should take in the future. The “This I Believe” paper is designed to help you form a conceptual and personal definition of leisure and recreation and to critically assess how mitigating and/or eliminating social and environmental inequities related to recreation and leisure will help to produce better communities. This paper should serve as a guiding framework – an anchor point to which you can turn when they are faced with ethical or value-laden issues during their career. This paper should incorporate readings from the class and, as appropriate, supplementary readings that support the student’s perspectives. Papers should be in APA format (6th or 7th edition), 12-point font, double-spaced, and should be at least 750 words, but not exceed 7 pages (excluding references). Below is a breakdown of how students will be assessed. Grading detail: Critical Thinking (30 points) • Incorporated critical thought about constraints to leisure engagement by marginalized populations (15) ___ • Demonstrated thoughtfulness of social and environmental justice issues within parks, recreation, and leisure (15) ___ Incorporation of Class Material (15 points) • Adequately included class and outside material to support conclusions (10) ___ • Class material synthesized within paper (10) ___ Personal Philosophy and Connection with more Just Communities (20 points) • State: Personal philosophical statement clearly expressed. This is a straightforward statement that encapsulates what you believe (5) ___ • Align: Explanation of how this definition aligns with recreation and leisure in contemporary society (5)__ • Apply. Explanation of how you believe recreation and leisure may be used to promote equity, access, and just communities (10)____ Formatting & References (10 points) • Writing style/organization, Grammar, spelling (5) ___ • Correct APA format in text & in references (5) ___ Total Score ______ /75

Risk management also involves reducing liability for your agency to reduce the consequences of damage or of breaching standards due to operations, products, services or negligence.

*This assignment is for a graduate-level course titled Law in Hospitality, Recreation, and Tourism. Risk Management Plan Instructions You are writing a plan – not a research paper. Select a specific Hospitality, Recreation, and/or Tourism setting to focus on. Write a plan that could be used to train staff about risk management. Limit the use of full sentences – highlight key information using detailed bullet points, original charts/graphs/tables, and include graphics throughout. 1. Develop an original Risk Management plan for one HRT program, facility or service. For example: A hotel front desk, kitchen in a restaurant, cruise ship activity program, special event, swimming pool, fitness center, after-school youth program, sports program, campus recreation fitness program, recreation therapy program, etc. 2. Risk management can be described as the process of proactively identifying potential risks to health and safety, analyzing those risks and taking precautionary steps to reduce or curb the risk. Protecting people (patrons, staff and others) is the top priority. Risk management also involves reducing liability for your agency to reduce the consequences of damage or of breaching standards due to operations, products, services or negligence. 3. The Risk Management Plan should focus on the prevention of accidents and injuries, reducing liability and improving safety. The plan you will be writing is different from a Crisis Management Plan – it will not include actions to be taken for sudden, significant and negative events that threaten the safety and security of many people. Your Risk Management Plan will not include an Emergency Action Plan (step-by-step protocols to deal with an injury, accident or medical emergency). Instead, design a plan centered on managing overall risk for an HRT program, facility or service that describes the standard of care and overall safety protocols. 4. This is not a generic assignment. Write a plan specifically for the HRT program, facility or service you select with an overall plan for managing risk in that setting. 5. A total of two references are required; all references should be directly related to your selected HRT setting and meet the following reference requirements: a. A minimum of one current article from a peer-reviewed journal or a trade publication published between 2006-2022. The article should relate directly to risk management in your selected HRT setting. The only acceptable .com website references are articles from a professional trade publication designed to improve practices for professionals in a trade or industry like a hotel, restaurant or recreation program. b. One current Risk Management Plan from an organization in your selected HRT field, published between 2006-2022. Tip: Search online using the name of the setting and the name of the plan (for example: Aquatic Risk Management Plan). c. Do NOT use general information from web pages, videos, Wikipedia, dictionaries, encyclopedias, book reviews, abstracts, press releases, magazine or newspaper articles. d. To look for references, you can search using Google or another search engine, using key terms like: risk management plan, hotel, restaurant, event, campus recreation, community center, parks and recreation, senior center, youth center, recreation therapy program, tourism business, etc. 6. The goal is to get ideas from references about what should be included in the plan and to write your own original, basic plan describing the steps you and your staff should take to manage risk. The work should be original and written by you for this class (with no direct quotes, no copying and pasting the work of others). Interpret ideas, lists, tables, charts and text from your references in your own words. 7. The plan should include concise, easy-to-follow written descriptions, lists, tables or charts. Your work must be in Word or PDF format for submission to Turnitin. 8. In the Risk Management Plan, you should identify risks, analyze risks (level of risk, foreseeability, likelihood of an injury or damage), steps to control the risk and monitor/review/modify procedures on an ongoing basis. Some elements of the plan are: a. Planning and training. b. Inspection, maintenance, cleaning and repair. c. Informed consent, waivers and insurance. d. Human resources, training, certifications, protocols. e. Facilities, equipment, storage, and use of chemicals. f. Documentation and Record Storage. Assignment details: 1. Use a readable font, and be sure to grammar and spell-check your document. Make the document easy to read, use and understand. Use headings to organize the plan. 2. Full citations in APA format should be provided at the end of the plan for all references used. Pay attention to capitalization and spacing, and include all required information. Do not underline, bold, or use a font color other than black in your citations. The reference list should be in alphabetical order. Double-space throughout the reference page and use a hanging indent (indent each line after the first in each citation). 3. You can earn up to 250 points for the assignment (2.5 letter grades). Points earned will be based on the professional presentation of the information, quality, content, originality, references, and citations. 4. There is no specified length for the assignment; design a plan that can be used to train professionals in the selected setting about procedures to manage risk. You are not being asked to write a long comprehensive document (some examples of Risk Management Plans posted online are hundreds of pages in length). However, you should write a detailed plan for one HRT facility, program or service that includes the main elements listed above (8 a-f). 5. Submit your work early to the Turnitin link so you have time to deal with technical issues and make revisions if needed. The level on the Similarity Report should be 14% or less, including citations, with no highlighted sections or sentences in the document other than citations. Use your own words throughout, do not copy the work of other authors or your previous work.

This may not only lead to community disruption, but ecosystem degradation, community dislocation, and cultural commodification and evaporation.

Instructions Tourism Impacts in Indonesia Assignment: In countries around the world, endemic peoples and communities and long-established ways of life are being impacted by tourism. While tourism in locations such as Bali and Costa Rica may contribute to economic prosperity and knowledge exchange, these benefits are often attenuated by tourist’s entitlement and lack of understanding and respect for the local culture, existing practices and customs, and the environment. This may not only lead to community disruption, but ecosystem degradation, community dislocation, and cultural commodification and evaporation. While watching this video, students should critically examine the issues that have resulted from increased tourism in Bali. Specifically, students should take note of how tourism and the recreation endeavors of outsiders have influenced environmental resources, local culture and customs, and development. After speaking to the issues in Bali, students should compare how these or similar issues may be impacting their own community or area in which they personally call “home”. ***** I call Orlando, Florida home**** For example, in Montana, increased tourism, residential migration, and inharmonious planning have led to the deforestation of thousands of acres of land. The result of this has been habitat destruction, ecosystem disruption, and disagreements with local residents. After critically thinking about these issues, students should write a paper of at least 600 words, but no more than 5 pages, excluding the reference page. The format should follow APA or MLA format for all citations. For this paper, you should have no fewer than 3 outside sources There are several questions that you may use to guide your paper: There are several questions that you may use to guide your paper: How does the culture/environment/tourism industry influence Bali residents and their way of life? What factors influenced/influence my recreational activities? What are the threats to my own community related to tourism/development in the future (i.e. in Tucson, how might tourism impact water practices/sustainability)? What is subject to change in the next decade? Who has a voice in making this change? Who does not? How might tourism threaten/constrain Bali residents’ moving forward? Is there possible ways to mitigate these harms? Can Bali residents find a balance between attracting tourist and maintaining their way of life? How can the five steps to fostering a leisure dialogue and understanding with indigenous communities information presented in the book and lecture apply here? How can issues in my community related to tourism be mitigated? What resources are/were available to me and my community that are absent to Bali residents? Remember: Be creative and have fun with this paper. Really take a good look at how leisure and recreation is constructed in your community. Research the organizations offering these services. Research who has access to services and who may not. The rubric showing the format for this assignment is posted under the assignments submissions page here in D2L. An overview of the point distribution is provided below. Tourism Assignment Rubric Criteria Points Available Introduction Student outlines the issues they will discuss regarding tourism in Bali in comparison to their own community /5 Breakdown of issues in Bali Student selects and explains issues present in Bali (hint: these issues may come from the video and other outside sources related to tourism) /10 Breakdown of issues in own community Student explains parks and recreation in their own community and issues that may exist /10 Comparison/Solutions Student compares and contrast the own community with those in Bali, outlining issues that may transcend both communities, how they differ, and what role parks and recreation plays in each location.
